Capturing Ideas: The Surreal Photography of Erik Johansson



Swedish and Berlin-based mixed media photographer Erik Johansson has created astounding work that is perhaps only surpassed by his remarkable process. We featured an image of his earlier on. At first glance, his surreal images – essentially landscape photographs transformed into something more magical – rouse wonder in people, and upon closer inspection, they are dressed to impress, with every minor detail considered and perfected. It’s his process, however, that really had us at hello. While many Photoshop artists use stock images to create their art, Erik is going out of his way to make his photographs more realistic and entirely his own. He meticulously draws, paints, creates miniature sets and cardboard cutouts, and shoots different spots and locations himself, all the while paying great attention to every single detail, before blending all these aspects together in a single photograph. Erik tells the Phoblographer: “To me photography is a way to collect material to realize the ideas in my mind. I get inspired by things around me in my daily life and all kinds of things I see. Although one photo can consist hundreds of layers I always want it to look like it could have been captured. Every new project is a new challenge and my goal is to realize it as realistic as possible.” Erik’s dedication to the craft is something we don’t see every day, which makes his work all the more inspiring. And with his painstaking creations, he actualizes images in his mind and molds them into something real for others. Surrealist Photographer Erik Johansson Bends Reality Without Photoshop



Even if you’ve never heard of Erik Johansson, chances are that you’ve already come across one of his surrealistic masterpieces online. The Swedish-born photo artist uses both physical objects and special retouching techniques to create fantastical worlds in which everything seems possible. Erik currently lives in Berlin where he’s steadily working on his amazingly creative photo projects, producing an astonishing amount of work and giving an incredible TED Talk before hitting his thirties. The Creators Project: Can you tell us about the creative process behind making these photos? Erik Johansson: For me, it's basically just problem solving when I’m trying to make a picture. It always starts with an idea and then I just have to sort of figure out how to translate that idea into an image. Every image consists of different parts and because I always want my work to look as realistic as possible, I shoot all of those parts individually with my camera and never use CGI. So in my work, I’m constantly trying to find out where and how I can capture all the various elements that make up a work. It takes just as much time to do something in real life as it does trying to "fake it" in Photoshop, so I just thought it would be more fun to do it for real. And because you use actual images, no one can ever tell you it doesn’t look realistic, which to me is very important. Finally, I really like the contrast of being in the countryside taking the photos and then coming to the city and putting it together. I like to combine both parts. Apart from the stunning visual effect, what other messages are you trying to convey with your photography? There's not some hidden meaning or something that you can figure out by looking at the images. It’s more about the visual aspects of it all, and the images reflect what I am thinking. So I guess it’s more up to the viewer to see the message in that sense. When I would read children's books as a kid, I rarely read the text. I just wanted to look at the pictures and create my own story. People should be able to do the same with my pictures. I merely want to give it a title and not talk too much about the message of the picture. "Let's Leave" "Face Fist" What inspires your work? Any specific sources, in particular? Inspiration can basically come from anywhere. It’s about seeing connections between things that normally don’t fit together. For example, I have this work where you see high-voltage cables that run into a guitar. That idea came simply by looking at it and thinking: Hey, those could be guitar strings. That was how the idea was born. It can be that simple sometimes. On your website there are a lot of instructional videos on how you made your projects. Can you tell us about offering these tips and encouraging people to possibly make similar work? I really enjoy seeing behind-the-scenes videos from other artists, as well. I think it’s very interesting to see how others work and how they create something. But if I had to give beginning artists a piece of advice, I’d say: Trying is the best way of learning. Just go out there and do stuff. With photography you just have to take pictures, you don’t need a fancy camera or know how to retouch something. You can learn a lot with very little. When I don't know something, I just Google it and find a solution for what I need. In the end, it's all about imagination and what you can come up with. I would really like to see more people doing this sort of thing. I think that would be very interesting. The scenes in your images are so specific that it's clear they come from one person's control and vision. Would you describe yourself as a control freak? I think you need to be a little bit of a control freak in order to do this kind of work. I always try to make it look perfect. And although I think it is impossible to actually achieve perfection, I hope I’m getting closer all the time. At some point you’re so tired of working with the pictures that you just have to leave it for a while and then later on you have to force yourself to go back to it. It’s good to have that kind of perfectionist goal. With regards to your photo, Iron Man, I once met someone who actually tried to iron her clothes while wearing them because she was in a hurry. Of course she burned herself: Do you think surrealism can encourage some regrettable ideas to people? [Laughs] Well, I don’t think that people should try the things that I do in my pictures. Photography and Surrealism



Surrealism was officially launched as a movement with the publication of poet André Breton’s first Manifesto of Surrealism in 1924. The Surrealists did not rely on reasoned analysis or sober calculation; on the contrary, they saw the forces of reason blocking the access routes to the imagination. Their efforts to tap the creative powers of the unconscious set Breton and his companions on a path that carried them through the territory of dreams, intoxication, chance, sexual ecstasy, and madness. The images obtained by such means, whether visual or literary, were prized precisely to the degree that they captured these moments of psychic intensity in provocative forms of unrestrained, convulsive beauty. Photography came to occupy a central role in Surrealist activity. In the works of Man Ray (2005.100.141) and Maurice Tabard (1987.1100.141), the use of such procedures as double exposure, combination printing, montage, and solarization dramatically evoked the union of dream and reality. Other photographers used techniques such as rotation (1987.1100.49) or distortion (1987.1100.321) to render their images uncanny. Hans Bellmer (1987.1100.15) obsessively photographed the mechanical dolls he fabricated himself, creating strangely sexualized images, while the painter René Magritte (1987.1100.157) used the camera to create photographic equivalents of his paintings. In her close-up photograph of a baby armadillo suspended in formaldehyde, Dora Maar performs a typical Surrealist inversion, making an ugly, or even repulsive subject compelling and bizarrely appealing (2005.100.443). But the Surrealist understanding of photography turned on more than the medium’s facility in fabricating uncanny images. Just as important was another discovery: even the most prosaic photograph, filtered through the prism of Surrealist sensibility, might easily be dislodged from its usual context and irreverently assigned a new role. Anthropological photographs, ordinary snapshots, movie stills, medical and police photographs—all of these appeared in Surrealist journals like La Révolution Surréaliste and Minotaure, radically divorced from their original purposes. This impulse to uncover latent Surrealist affinities in popular imagery accounts, in part, for the enthusiasm with which Surrealists embraced Eugène Atget’s photographs of Paris. Published in La Révolution Surréaliste in 1926 at the suggestion of his neighbor, Man Ray, Atget’s images of vanished Paris were understood not as the work of a competent professional or a self-conscious artist but as the spontaneous visions of an urban primitive—the Henri Rousseau of the camera. In Atget’s photographs of the deserted streets of old Paris and of shop windows haunted by elegant mannequins, the Surrealists recognized their own vision of the city as a “dream capital,” an urban labyrinth of memory and desire.

Camera-less Photography Techniques



The essence of photography lies in its seemingly magical ability to fix shadows on light-sensitive surfaces. Normally, this requires a camera, but not always. Several artists work without a camera, creating images on photographic paper by casting shadows and manipulating light, or by chemically treating the surface of the paper. Images made with a camera imply a documentary role. In contrast, camera-less photographs show what has never really existed. They are also always ‘an original’ because they are not made from a negative. Encountered as fragments, traces, signs, memories or dreams, they leave room for the imagination, transforming the world of objects into a world of visions. Processes & techniques Camera-less photographs can be made using a variety of techniques, the most common of which are the photogram, the luminogram and the chemigram. These techniques are sometimes used in combination. Many involve an element of chance.

 Chemigram

 Chemigrams are made by directly manipulating the surface of photographic paper, often with varnishes or oils and photographic chemicals. They are produced in full light and rely on the maker's skill in harnessing chance for creative effect. Documented experiments are often an important part of the process.

 Digital C-print

 A print made from digital images using digital printers. Inside such printers, chromogenic (or 'C'-type) photographic paper is exposed to red, green and blue lasers. The paper is then processed in the traditional, chemical-based manner. Images created by camera-less methods can be digitised and turned into C-prints. When processed in this way, camera-less images can be retouched, enlarged and reproduced as multiples.

 Dye destruction print

 A print made using direct positive colour paper. This paper was originally introduced in 1963 for printing colour transparencies or negatives. It is coated with at least three layers of emulsion, each of which is sensitised to one of the three primary colours. Each layer also contains a dye related to that colour. During development of the image, any unexposed dyes are bleached out (hence 'dye destruction'). The remaining dyes form a full-colour image.

 Gelatin-silver print

 A print made using paper that has been coated with gelatin containing silver salts. Where light strikes the silver salts, they become dark. The image is then developed out using chemical developer. The paper itself can have a matt or gloss surface, and the image can be toned. Introduced in 1871, the gelatin-silver print is still in general use today.

 Luminogram

 A variation of the photogram (see below). In a luminogram, light falling directly on the paper forms the image. Objects placed between the light and the paper (but not touching the paper) will filter or block the light, depending on whether they are transparent or opaque.

 Photogram

 Photograms are made by placing an object in contact with a photosensitive surface in the dark, and exposing both to light. Where the object blocks the light, either partially or fully, its shadow is recorded on the paper. The term 'photogram' seems to have appeared around 1925. The photogram artist is not able to predict the results in the viewfinder of a camera, and often works in the dark. The final image is only apparent after physical and chemical manipulation or development.

Strangers, secrets and desire: the surreal world of Sophie Calle Sean O'Hagan Saturday 4 March 2017 07.00 EST Sophie Calle is France’s most famous – and the world’s most quintessentially French – conceptual artist. She once said that she became an artist because she wanted to seduce her father, who was an avid art collector. In the pursuit of her art, she has become a stripper, a stalker and a thief, famously finding a stranger’s address book on the street and, instead of returning it, contacting everyone in it and asking them for a description of the owner. Calle, 63, has been using photography as well as text, video, film and performance in her work since the late 1970s. In 2003, Paris’s Pompidou Centre staged a retrospective of her work and the Whitechapel Gallery, London, followed suit in 2010. In 2007, she represented France at the Venice Biennale. Somewhat belatedly, then, she has made it on to the shortlist of the 2017 Deutsche Börse photography prize for what is, in her terms, a rather traditional publication. Sophie Calle: My All is a retrospective photo-book comprising postcard-style photographs documenting all 54 of her artworks thus far. What Do You See? (2013). She is also planing to release a concept album about the cat, which will include a piece by Laurie Anderson and another by the French singer Camille. From the beginning, Calle’s work has merged elements of fiction, fantasy, performance and documentary in its ongoing investigation of the increasingly blurred boundaries between the private and the public, the voyeuristic and the theatrical. Photograph: Sophie Calle In 1979’s Sleepers, she invited 29 people to occupy her bed for eight hours as she observed them sleeping, waking and eating breakfast served by her. That same year, she created what was, perhaps, her first signature piece, Suite Vénitienne, which began when she met a stranger at a party and decided to somehow follow him to Venice. What followed was part theatrical performance and part noir detective thriller. Having found him, she somehow convinced the woman in the room opposite to let her use it to clandestinely photograph his daily comings-and-goings while disguised as a maid. Like much of what was to follow, Suite Vénitienne depends for its power on the evocation of desire and obsession as well as the artist’s willingness to make work that relies on intrusion and surveillance. But Calle’s approach is more mischievously complex than that. The postmodernist French thinker, Jean Baudrillard, in an essay for the resulting book, pointed out the wilful contradiction at the heart of the undertaking. “Nothing was to happen, not one event that might establish any contact or relationship between them.” Her seeming obsessions are played out, first and foremost, in the creation of her art. Photograph: Sophie Calle In 1980, however, for her project, The Bronx, she placed herself at the centre of her art in a different and more vulnerable way by walking around the economically deprived streets of New York’s South Bronx and asking strangers to take her to what they considered a special place. The result is an uneasy portrait of a beleaguered neighbourhood and its people through her encounters in a single day. It is the closest she has yet come to documentary portraiture, though, in 2010, she made an installation piece, To the Sea, in which she recorded on film the reactions of elderly residents of Istanbul who had never seen the sea. Photograph: Sophie Calle This merging of chance and order, randomness and ritual in her work caught the attention of Paul Auster, and he recreated her in his 1992 novel, Leviathan, as Maria, an artist whose “activity didn’t stem from a desire to make art so much as from a need to indulge her obsessions”. In 1994, they collaborated on a project during which she spent days smiling at every stranger she met and set about personalising a public phone box with a new coat of paint flowers, snacks and note pads. Calle’s work is at its most powerful when it transgresses social codes. For Take Care of Yourself, which she showed at the 2007 Venice Biennale, she sent a curt break-up text she had received from a lover to 107 women requesting their reactions. She received advice in the form of songs, drawings and even a copy of the letter with three bullet holes though it. This is art not so much as self-therapy, but as a way of holding up a mirror to human behaviour as it is tested and sometimes unmoored by desire and obsession – and indeed any rupture in the fabric of the public rituals we construct to mask our deeper selves. As our lives become more public on social media and the border between the private and the public ever more politically contested, Calle seems increasingly like an artist whose provocations are more like premonitions. The Photographic Idea: Reconsidering Conceptual Photography (1999)

“They were there simply to indicate a radical art that had already vanished. The photograph was necessary only as a residue for communication.” – Dennis Oppenheim on his use of photographs.(1)

This statement by Dennis Oppenheim introduces the paradox inherent in any discussion of photography within Conceptual Art. Since the mid-1960s, conceptual artists have denied any interest in photography per se. To hear the artists tell it, photography was only useful or interesting to them insofar as it was instrumental in conveying or recording their ideas. Time and again artists describe the photographs themselves as either brute information or uninflected documentation. For many years curators, critics and historians have corroborated this reductive understanding of the role of photography in Conceptual Art. Sidestepping the aesthetic properties of conceptual photographs is convenient; it simplifies the distinction between Conceptualism and the more material-based practices of Pop Art and Minimalism. Taking the artists at their word, writers have also been able to divorce conceptual photography from the history of photography more broadly, maintaining a rigid distinction between conceptual and fine art photography of the same moment.

As we know, however, the intentions of artists and the historical effects of their work are rarely synonymous. For example, artists who have benefited from the renewed critical and curatorial interest in Conceptual Art in the last decade have themselves resisted the label “conceptual.”(2) This is understandable – no practicing artist wants to be pigeon-holed as an example of an historical movement. Yet the conceptual designation has been crucial to the historical understanding of this period of work. Along the same lines, the conceptualists’ contrary stance on photography should not be accepted at face value. Despite their professed disregard for photography, the conceptualists participated in an important transformation of the medium, fueling a rise in the prominence of photography that attracted critical attention in the “Pictures” generation of the late 1970s and early 1980s.(3)

First-generation Conceptual Art is an important point of origin for the continuing success of photographs by artists who do not consider themselves to be photographers in the traditional sense.(4) The conceptual artists’ very lack of investment in photography allowed them to generate new possibilities for the medium. However, they were not alone in this enterprise. Fine art photographers during the late 1960s such as Gary Winogrand and Lee Friedlander shared with the conceptualists an interest in identifying and subverting the conventions of photographic vision.

The refusal of conceptualists to take photography seriously on its own terms is rooted in the earliest definitions of their project. From the beginning, ideas were prioritized over the material form in which they were conveyed. Sol LeWitt provided a seminal formulation of this notion in his 1967 essay “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art”: “In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.” LeWitt dismisses the material form of the piece as secondary, an “afterthought” so to speak: “When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.”(5) Due to its apparent immediacy, photography was an apt medium with which to pursue this idea-driven art.

Critic Lucy Lippard approached Conceptualism from a slightly different angle, coining the term “the dematerialization of the art object” in the late 1960s.(6) Framing conceptual works as a form of disembodied sculpture, the notion of dematerialization has been one of the main obstacles to the serious study of conceptual photography. Like LeWitt, Lippard acknowledges that conceptual works might take a physical form, including photographs, but she does not see the object as the site of the art idea. In the introduction to Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object from 1966-72 (1973), Lippard admits to a flaw in the idea of dematerialization, that “a piece of paper or a photograph is as much an object, or as ‘material’ as a ton of lead” but she sticks with the term because of her conviction that a “deemphasis on material aspects” is key to the conceptual project. Thus Lippard gives critical support to one of the central fallacies of Conceptualism. Text and photographs participate in the production of the work’s meaning, but the existence of that form is repeatedly repressed or denied.

The analytic model of Conceptual Art that Joseph Kosuth provides in his 1973 essay “Art After Philosophy” is even more rigorous in undermining the visual, material aspects of the work of art. Playing an end-game with Clement Greenberg’s pursuit of the self-referential art object, Kosuth imagines a completely self-contained, tautological artwork, framed in language: “. . . the propositions of art are not factual, but linguistic in character – that is, they do not describe the behavior of physical or even mental objects; they express definitions of art, or the formal consequences of definitions of art.”(7) Recent writers, however, have begun to remark upon a blind spot in this analytic formulation of Conceptualism. As British art historian John Roberts points out in his 1997 book, The Impossible Document: Photography and Conceptual Art in Britain 1966-76, the majority of conceptual artworks contain photographs, unruly visual elements that cannot be adequately matched by or contained in discourse.(8) This dynamic is evident in Kosuth’s own famous works such as One And Three Chairs (1965) in which the three instantiations of the word “chair” – a dictionary definition, a photograph and an actual chair – are not commensurable. The piece clearly demonstrates the failure of language to contain visual or physical form.

Although Kosuth and other conceptualists claimed not to be interested in photography, in fact photographic properties were at stake in much of their work. The conceptual work of the period provides a sustained exploration of the photographic medium and its conventions. Such diverse artists as Jan Dibbets, John Baldessari and Oppenheim created work in which the idea and its specific material instantiation are both photographic. In other words, these pieces direct their conceptual interrogation towards photography as medium; they question what a photograph is and does. Not all conceptual works that use photographs address the properties of photography in such a direct way. Nonetheless, the non-art “look” of much conceptual photography should not be taken at face value. Deadpan style conceals an investigation that takes place in visual as well as linguistic terms. Viewers unfamiliar with Dibbets’s perspective corrections often assume that they are manipulated or montaged photographs. Perspective correction – square in grass, Vancouver, 1969 looks as if the photographer has cut out a square from a photograph of earth and pasted it on top of the image of the lawn. Closer observation reveals cast shadows on the top and left-hand side of the dirt square and pieces of string marking the edges of the shape that show that the shape is in fact a hole in the grass. This straight photograph can be understood by remembering what we know about the workings of photography: that the monocular vision of the camera transforms three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional perspectival design. The photograph illustrates that it is possible to anticipate this effect and reverse it, for example, by making an irregular trapezoidal shape (as cut in the grass by Dibbets) that the camera will render as a perfect square. The “idea” of this piece is a visual one that can be most effectively grasped by the audience in the process of viewing. When interviewed about his work of this period, Dibbets described it as developing out of his troubled relationship with painting and the fixed viewing angle required by most canvases. Dibbets dismisses the photographs as unnecessary to the original intention of the work: “The documentation about the work isn’t of real importance to me either. I’ve done lots of works without taking photographs.”(9) Yet his documents have an independent existence as self-critical photographs. The most provocative part of the image is the area where photographic representation breaks down, forcing viewers to question their understanding of photographic perspective. The gaping dark square in the well-manicured lawn is disturbingly “wrong,” especially when measured against the dutifully receding architecture. Dibbets makes a linguistic play on this wrongness by calling each piece a “correction,” as if it is the camera that distorts and the artist who corrects. Perspective correction cuts to the heart of conventionalized photographic space and undermines our confidence in the transparency of the photographic index.

In Wrong (1967) Baldessari makes reference to a different photographic convention: that two shapes that touch in a photograph are understood as touching in the world. The image shows the artist standing on the sidewalk outside a suburban California ranch house. The viewing distance and symmetry of the photograph fit the rigid profile of the amateur snapshot, except that the subject is perfectly lined up with a palm tree, which therefore appears to grow out of his head. This faux pas is one that only the most careless shutterbug would make. Baldessari borrows the format of the image with its caption from photography “how-to” manuals, using the convention of “right” and “wrong” illustrations to skew formulaic art school aesthetics. Capitalizing on the medium’s potential to create perceptual confusion, Wrong undermines photography as a reliable system of representation.

Like Dibbets, Baldessari considered painting to be his frame of reference. He turned to photography in part because it seemed to be a way to free himself from painterly signifiers. He commented in a 1990 interview, “I thought, I’m not using paint, it’s a photographic process, and so you can’t claim that they’re paintings . . . I wanted to be less artful than Rauschenberg or Warhol: this is a photograph, here’s a text. That’s it.”(10) Bringing his photographic images and text (hand-lettered by a sign painter) together on canvas, Baldessari reinforces the reading of the works of this period as anti-painting. The image was made by coating the canvas with photoemulsion and projecting a 35mm negative directly onto it in the darkroom. This photographic process was experimental, crude and produced images of rather poor quality. Thus, the technique allowed Baldessari to avoid association with the traditional touch of painting, the pop slickness of photo-silkscreen or the glossy surface of fine art photography.

In Oppenheim’s Reading Position for Second Degree Burn (1970) the artist’s own body functions as a site for conceptual activity. The piece includes a linguistic, propositional caption: “Stage I, Stage II. Book, skin, solar energy. Exposure time: 5 hours. Jones Beach, 1970.” This text sets up the work’s conceptual parameters, but does not make the images redundant. The impact and humor of Reading Position relies upon the two photographs: the “before” image of the artist lying on the beach with a large open book resting on his bare chest and the “after” image, in which the artist’s skin is visibly redder, except for a pale rectangle where the book had been. Oppenheim, also, discusses his piece in relation to painting: “The piece has its roots in the notion of colour change. Painters have always artificially instigated colour activity. I allowed myself to be painted, my skin became pigment. I could regulate its intensity through control of the exposure time.”(11) In some ways, the photographs confirm this reference to painting – though as opposed to the sunburned skin, it is the white rectangle on the artist’s chest that looks like a monochrome painting. Yet the piece is clearly photographic as well as painterly, as is clear from Oppenheim’s reference to exposure time. In effect, the artist is using the book and the sun to create a photogram on his body.

The photography in Oppenheim’s piece bears a special burden because it documents a performance, a mode in which the actions and experience of the artistic subject are themselves identified as a locus of artistic meaning. Photographs of performance or body art have an ambiguous status. By some, including Oppenheim himself, they are seen as mere records of a lost moment of authenticity. By others, they are seen as figurative works of art in and of themselves, gaining their authority by dint of the direct indexical relationship of the photograph to the original event.(12) Reading Position is a demonstration of the principle of indexicality. By comparing his body to a piece of photographic paper Oppenheim is giving the authority of personal experience to the index; he felt the effects of the sun leaving its physical trace on his body. As opposed to a faked or staged photograph (such as Dibbets’s), the presumably painful image created on Oppenheim’s body is incontrovertibly “real” – at least to him. But Oppenheim also underlines the extent to which indexicality is a matter of degree, by contrasting the immediate effects of the sun on his skin to the more mediated process of photography. Comparatively, the photographic index is shown to be constructed rather than natural. Oppenheim signals this with the book, entitled Tactics, he chose to shield his chest.

In his essay on photography for the 1995 Conceptualism exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, photographer Jeff Wall takes the position of a critic. He states that Conceptualism did, in fact, explore the medium specificity of photography and that the movement contributed to the acceptance of photography as fine art. He asserts: “Conceptual art played an important role in the transformation of the terms and conditions within which art-photography defined itself and its relationships with the other arts, a transformation which established photography as an institutionalized modernist form evolving explicitly through the dynamics of its auto-critique.”(13) Wall attributes this transformation to two factors. First, he sees photographic Conceptualism as having undermined the kinds of artistic subjectivity represented by photojournalism by offering a parodic reportage without event. Second, he argues that the work negated the technique and imagination of traditional fine art photography by substituting a pose of amateurism. As he describes it, the resulting photographs are so visually banal that they demand to be viewed with a new kind of intellectual seriousness. While Wall’s overarching point about the impact of Conceptualism on photography is valid, his assessment of the status of the medium in the 1960s is debatable. Characteristics that he describes as unique to Conceptual Art were in fact much more pervasive in photography. Fine art photographers, as well as and perhaps more than conceptualists, defined their project against the professional mode of journalism. Many art photographers resisted the narrative legibility and compositional resolution of journalistic work and instead explored modes familiar to amateur photography.

The Conceptualists and the fine art photographers of the period were grappling with the high formalist theories of the 1950s, although through different channels. Conceptual artists often conceived their works in reaction to Greenberg’s writing on formalist painting. Greenberg’s own position on photography was dismissive; he only wrote one extended piece on photography – a scathing review of a 1946 Edward Weston exhibition. Greenberg saw photography’s uses within an art context as very narrowly circumscribed. For him, the limitation upon the medium’s artistic potential was its indexicality (although it was not a term he used himself). As he summarized the issue: “Photography is the most transparent of the art mediums devised or discovered by man. It is probably for this reason that it proves so difficult to make the photograph transcend its almost inevitable function as document, and act as a work of art as well.”(14)

In Greenberg’s view, photography’s transparent relationship to the world undermines any attempts on the part of photographers to make autonomous works of art. A photograph that respects the obligations of its own medium would be anecdotal and literary. Greenberg exiles realism from painting, yet requires it in photography. In accordance with this opinion that photography ought to have “human interest,” Greenberg finds Walker Evans’s photographs to be exemplary. Weston’s images, however, in attempting to become autonomous works of art through abstraction, fail to be self-referential. For Greenberg they are self-indulgently photographic, failing to show the true nature of photography and displaying an “excessive concentration on the medium.” An overemphasis on the surface of the photograph offers only an “estranging coldness.”(15) If the photograph placed emphasis on itself as index, rather than pointing outward to the world, it lapsed into a presence of its own. Greenberg considered medium specificity and formalism to be synonymous in painting. His analysis of photography, however, did not allow the medium any formal values of its own.

Unsurprisingly then, photographic aesthetics languished during the 1940s and ’50s. While Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) curator Beaumont Newhall had begun to develop a formalist theory of photography in the 1930s, relying in particular on a binary opposition between tone and detail, he was replaced by Edward Steichen after World War II. Steichen’s shows and publications, The Family of Man (1955) foremost among them, prioritized subject matter and did not hesitate to violate the form of photographs by cropping them, enlarging or grouping them theatrically in space. There was no real advocate of formalism in photography until John Szarkowski became Director of the Department of Photography at MoMA in 1962.(16) With a directive and desire to legitimate photography as a fine art, Szarkowski generated a transliteration of Greenberg’s formalist aesthetics into photographic terms. He embraced the notion of medium specificity but rejected Greenberg’s emphasis on the indexical essence of photography.

Szarkowski laid out his approach in 1966, in a brief but highly influential eponymous catalog essay for the exhibition “The Photographer’s Eye.” In it he distills the photographic medium to five properties: “The Thing Itself,” “The Detail,” “The Frame,” “Time” and “Vantage Point.” He defines “The Thing Itself” as the actual, the presence of reality in the photograph, what is called the index. While Greenberg describes transparency as the key defining characteristic of photography, Szarkowski seeks to undermine the power of the index by revealing its artificially conventionalized nature. He writes that our faith in the thing itself “is naive and illusory, but it persists.”(17) For him, photographs offer an illusion of transparency, which need not serve as a limitation, but merely add a frisson of reality to the image. Identifying the trace of the real as one of the defining characteristics of photography, Szarkowski claims it as part of his formalist model, even though it is a semiotic rather than an aesthetic property of the medium. Similarly, “The Detail” is a category designed to refute the notion that photographs are fundamentally anecdotal. The term does not refer to the precision of photographs, but rather to their capacity to resist narrative. Szarkowski asserts that the fragmentation created by cropping photographs allows an image to function as a symbol rather than a story because it is cut off from spatial and temporal continuity. “The Frame” and “Vantage Point” are the two most dearly formal categories. The former refers to the edges of each image and the resulting geometric patterns created within the picture, while the latter describes the spatial relationship between camera and subject. “Time” also becomes a formal category for Szarkowski; it refers to the lines and shapes created in the composition at the moment of exposure.

This brief overview of Szarkowski’s formalist categories reveals that each is threatened by the presence of impinging non-formal concerns. The scheme presented in “The Photographer’s Eye” was effective in legitimating a form of photographic modernism, complete with autonomous artworks and inspired authors. The theory was particularly useful to MoMA in allowing photographs made at any time for any reason to be judged aesthetically without reference to their original context. By daring to attempt to define photography in terms of medium specificity, Szarkowski opened the door to photographers making use of all photographic properties, including those that he deliberately repressed – indexicality, contingency and conventionality. These were precisely the properties foregrounded in the works of Szarkowski’s proteges Winogrand and Friedlander.

In an untitled Winogrand photograph from the early 1970s, a middle-aged woman and a boy walk hand-in-hand toward a cannon. The picture is full of visual incident. It appears to have been taken with a wide-angle lens, allowing the photographer to incorporate a broad swath of space from a close vantage point. Reflective puddles show that it was taken on a rainy day. The wood planks of the ground and the word “boat” on a building indicate that the picture was made in a maritime setting. The figures are framed by buildings and cars, including a wildly painted Morris Minor. The photograph’s force, however, derives from the cannon in the bottom right-hand corner, which points up at an angle towards the two figures in the center of the frame. The visual anecdote created by this composition is entirely an element of the photographer’s position. Szarkowski saw Winogrand as constantly supplementing the subject matter that he found before him: “He believed that a successful photograph must be more interesting than the thing photographed.”(18) In this case, the photograph’s success resides in its creation of a visual anecdote out of unrelated elements in the world. While Szarkowski might see this as a triumph of the photographer’s unique vision, it could also be read as a subversion of originality. Making use of the imaginary sight line between the old cannon and the figures, Winogrand is playing on the same photographic rules targeted by Baldessari in Wrong. As in that piece, the photographer relies upon a perceptual error to give the picture meaning.

Szarkowski writes that Winogrand would look through the viewfinder and if he saw a familiar image he would not take the photograph.(19) The critic reads this as a sign of genius, but we could also understand it as a surrender of control, especially given the extraneous fact that Winogrand often let curators select works themselves from his mountains of contact sheets. That Winogrand avoided composing his pictures suggests less that he wanted the naivete of an amateur photographer than that he hoped to stumble upon someone else’s amateur photographs and use them like readymades. Like the conceptualists, Winogrand exploits a de-skilled photographic aesthetic – though, in his case, with formal ends in mind. For Winogrand there is no linguistic content. The goal is to produce pictures that are interesting to look at specifically because they teeter on the brink of banality. In a process parallel to the way conceptualists defined themselves against formalist painting, many of the fine art photographers of the 1960s and ’70s set themselves up against the narrative richness and formal fullness of both journalistic and fine art photography.

In much of Friedlander’s photography, the “wrong” model of photography is elevated to a signature style. In Lafayette, Louisiana (1968), Friedlander deliberately places a conspicuous vertical object, with no inherent value, in the foreground of the picture field, blocking our entry into the photographic space. While Baldessari’s palm tree is read as a signifier of bad photography, Friedlander uses it as a formal leitmotif. With these obstacles, Friedlander repeatedly demonstrates his resistance to a professionalized photographic aesthetic. Lafayette, Louisiana is one of several parade images in which the photographer avoids conventional frontal views and offers instead an anti-journalistic rear view of the event. In this case we see the backs of three uniformed figures and a lone majorette. Any importance the event may have had, other than as a configuration of shapes in space, is lost. At the base of the telephone or electrical pole, we see the shadow of a head, presumably the photographer’s. This inclusion of Friedlander’s shadow or reflection is characteristic of many other photographs. The projection of the author into the plane of the image is another violation of journalistic practice. With the shadow, Friedlander shows that the work is intended to be self-reflexive and subjective. If it were not so completely associated with Szarkowski and his formalist approach, this series of self-portraits might be seen as a kind of performance piece. In her discussion of the origins of postmodern art, art historian Abigail Solomon-Godeau describes the decline of photographic formalism in the 1960s and ’70s and the corresponding rise of interest in photographic works by artists who were able to approach the medium without the theoretical or institutional baggage of photographic modernism.(20) She sees the fine art photography of the period as characterized by “exhaustion, academicism and repetition.”(21) This state resulted not only from the failure of Szarkowski-style formalism, but also from the photographers’ exploration of medium-specific, but non-formal characteristics of their medium. Winogrand and Friedlander simultaneously fetishize and collapse form in their photographs. Event is indistinguishable from non-event, bad timing is celebrated and tropes of photographic “failure” are used as signatures of a newly self-aware, self-critical tendency. These works were certainly framed institutionally as high modernism and were promoted with an emphasis on mastery and originality. Nonetheless, the photographs have similarities with the conceptual works of the same period and the boundaries between them were sustained with a certain amount of anxiety. Conceptualists and fine art photographers shared common attitudes: neither was content continuing reliance on the transparency of the photographic index or on the naturalness of familiar photographic conventions.

Photographic postmodernism owes a debt to both austere photographic Conceptualism and MoMA-style photographic formalism. Artists such as Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Louise Lawler advanced the conceptual exploration of the nature of art into a critique of the political, institutional and semiotic conditions of representation. At the same time, their work has a formal component, relying explicitly on meanings produced within the pictures themselves. Sherman’s “Untitled Film Stills” of the late 1970s, for example, interrogate the conditions of photography from both angles. Like Dibbets, Baldessari or Oppenheim, Sherman preconceives a conceptual project that she then carries out with photographs. Alleged stills from films that never existed, the “Untitled Film Stills” remind us yet again that the photographic index is illusory and that our vision is powerfully influenced by convention. Like Winogrand, Sherman plays with a found photographic aesthetic, though she creates seemingly familiar, cliched images rather than apparently flesh ones. Like Friedlander, she uses her own presence in the images as a formal leitmotif. In her case, however, self-portraiture does not point toward the photographer’s own subjectivity, but rather to a gendered critique of the gaze. Photography produced since the 1970s has relied on discoveries made in the work of the conceptualists and the formalist photographers of the 1960s. While the former worked in opposition to Greenberg’s formalist scheme for painting, and the latter were influenced by Szarkowski’s version of photographic formalism, together they demonstrated that medium specificity for photography could encompass both images and ideas. Inverting Greenberg’s criticism of photography as anecdotal, they showed that a system of reference to the outside word, indexically with all its perceptual tricks and pitfalls, was itself a strength of the medium. Whether tempering photographic modernism with the look of amateurism, like Winogrand and Friedlander, or making use of a banal instrumental aesthetic, like the conceptualists, 1960s practitioners opened stylistic avenues for photography while at the same time generating new subject matter within the dynamics of photographic representation. Contingency, which both Greenberg and Szarkowski identified as a central weakness of photography as a modernist medium, earned photography a key role in contemporary art.

Ed Ruscha’s One-Way Street

Edward Ruscha arrived in Los Angeles in 1956, delivered by the car trip he and high school friend Mason Williams took in Ruscha’s black 1950 Ford from Oklahoma to the suburban-like stretch of a rapidly developing L.A. Over the next seven years, Ruscha drove the distance between L.A. and Oklahoma City several times, often documenting it by taking snapshots of gas stations along U.S. Route 66 that record the experience of the drive. Although many of the photographs were shot from across the road, several of the images are framed by the visual parameters set by a car window. They appear to be taken from the spatial perspective of the dashboard.1 A collection of flatly laconic snapshots then got strung together and rerouted onto the pages of a book. Titled with the threadbare economy of fact, Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1962) is a booklet that presents, or rather fails to present, the road’s physical extension through the connect-the-dots-like points of flat gas station signboards. Although Ruscha already assumed a peripatetic approach characteristic of his later books, driving without adhering to any linear west-to-east route, the terrain between stations, implicit from stop to stop, is never presented to view. While the drive itself was usually linear, starting from the west and heading east, the route in the book drifts free of any such destination-driven order. Succinctly invoking the canned canon of the history of painting, Ruscha said of his organization of the banality of the interstate, “I don’t have any Seine River like Monet. I just have U.S. 66 between Oklahoma and Los Angeles.”2 He nonetheless perversely withholds U.S. 66 from our visual access by physically occupying it. The means of translating the experience of the road to view—photographs of material encountered on the trip—effectively obscures the road itself. The car functions as a frame for everything we see, mediating our perceptual field. The Seine, by contrast, was occasionally the object, the iconography, presented and fetishized in Monet’s painting. It appears in rather than as the field of vision.

The renegotiated subjective and experiential dimension of vision introduced in works such as Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), Royal Road Test (1967), and Real Estate Opportunities (1970) responds to a singular thread in the historical matrix of postwar urban America. To flesh out the viability of locating the car as the mediating structure of Ruscha’s work, I will elaborate on the bankruptcy of established mediums, both painterly and photographic, available to him under the new perceptual and structural conditions of fifties America. The car provided a specific communicative solution at a particular juncture, the most salient feature of which was the irrelevance of previously pertinent artistic mediums such as “art” photography or documentary photography. These changed aesthetic conditions ran parallel to, if not outright internalized, a set of changed socioeconomic conditions in an era of explosive consumerist exuberance. Ruscha’s use of the car emerges as the vehicle for an apparently unlikely staging of subjectivity that exceeds both obsolete models of integrated consciousness on the one hand and the increasingly expropriative demands of the culture industry on the other.

Of course, Ruscha had a set of predecessors, the figures of fifties literary and beat culture, who thematized the road as one way of protesting postwar consumerist values. In 1951, Jack Kerouac set his sights on the road with a story of two guys headed west, just as Ruscha and Williams would in 1956. In his fictional account, entitled On the Road and published in 1957, Kerouac had wanted to express “the soul that journeys along the open highway of America, in search of permanence, of values that will endure and not collapse.”3 Ironically, the very object of advanced consumerism in fifties America—the car—is called upon as the medium of transport away from the flux of commodity culture, which Kerouac characterized as ephemeral, vulnerable to exchange and substitution.4 The journey out west promises, tacitly, to provide distance and furnish a perspective, as it leads toward permanence and enduring values elsewhere. The car not only delivers the protagonists from being situated or implicated anywhere along their travels, but charts them in relation to the grand transcendental terms, indeed the sky, that Ruscha vehemently eschews. Leaving Louisiana to head further west, one of the characters of On the Road asks: “What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? It’s the too huge world vaulting us as we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.” In Kerouac’s quest narrative, the road extends like a vertical line between the nose of the protagonists’ car and a future understood spatially.

The field that projects Sal and Dean onward functions like a perspectival line along which they move toward an apex point. Kerouac evokes a traditional organization of depth perspective as essential to the road, which plays a pivotal role in structuring the narrative. His framework, moreover, hinges on a prospective model of perception and cognition.5 Louis Marin develops the idea of a prospective model of vision, in which the formal construction of representation of the world to the self involves three terms: the eye, the object, and the “visual ray” connecting the distance between eye and object. This line, or ray, organizes perception and, concomitantly, investment in the outside field, placing emphasis on a single point at the far end of the ray and diminishing the rest of the perceptual field, which becomes increasingly relegated to the status of undifferentiated ground. Kerouac’s framework depends upon a prospectively bounded subject. That is to say that consciousness and perception remain fully integrated, unified, and mapped along the spatio-temporal coordinates of conventional single-point perspective. The narrative is bound by the faith that this model remains a viable means of engagement with an exterior at that particular historical juncture, as though an “outside,” a space above and beyond systems of equivalence and exchange, existed elsewhere, especially given the protagonists’ embodied situatedness in the car, on the road. Ruscha, by contrast, begins to enact a model of subjectivity in covert resistance to, and in dialogue with, both the proliferation of systems of exchange and Kerouac’s naive denial of those conditions.

The manuscript of On the Road embodies Kerouac’s belief in the function of narrative to relay him to a self-determined destination, from a beginning to an end, and beyond that, an ends. According to Kerouac biographer Anne Charters, “Much has been made of the manuscript. Its mode of composition has become a modern myth. It was first written on a 16-foot roll of paper. Kerouac sketched the flow that existed intact in his mind.”6 Here, the mind transposes itself without mediation; nothing complicates the transmittal of thought to hand. Appearing as if magical and “intact,” the narrative proceeds perspectivally from a present to a future. Like the vertical stretch of road up ahead on the highway, it implies the possibility of an internally bounded relationship to the external flow of objects, a controlled distance between inside and outside.

By contrast, Ruscha’s books highlight the many layers of mediation through which they are constituted; editing and cropping appear at once arbitrary and yet all the more purposive for pointing to the conditions of the frame as the very matrix of vision. Ruscha’s production responds with implosive violence to both Kerouac’s mid-century version of an individualized Manifest Destiny and the Romantic American dream, and to the object of Kerouac’s own critique, an increasingly ubiquitous consumer culture. This response demonstrates the changing terrain of American culture between 1951 and 1963 through the procedures of occupying and newly configuring the celebrated fifties tropes of car and road to ultimately enact another form of hybrid resistance.

Royal Road Test takes the celebrated Kerouac typewriter and tosses it from the car into the desert, where it breaks against the gravel and becomes so much wreckage, finally part and parcel with the ground. Ruscha and collaborators Williams and Patrick Blackwell then go to great lengths to document the physical traces of the event in its aftermath, which results in a book of photographs of typewriter parts embedded in dirt and sand that occupy the entirety of the frame. The plane of vision is literally smashed into the desert ground. The viewer arrives after the test has happened, to confront wreckage, and the aftermath of violent impact is nonetheless neatly contained in the pages of a discrete book.

Two years earlier, in 1965, Ruscha had begun to develop his own use of the car as a medium. He shifted its role from that of a trope reflective of an integrated subject, as it had been in Kerouac’s work, to that of an internally hybridized assemblage of camera, car, and road, which could investigate a new set of communicative potentialities. Ruscha suggested first an elision between the car and the snapshot, and then one between the process of collecting photographs in small books and the process of driving as an act of passage. The car figures in the bookwork as the vehicle enabling the act of photography, as if the car were itself part of the camera apparatus, generative of another means of framing experience.

Next, in 1966, Ruscha started reeling down L.A.’s Sunset Strip and taking snapshots with a now motorized camera attached to his car. The recorded visual trace of this drive, a bandlike stretch structurally homologous with the extension of the Strip itself, positions our point of view as from the car’s passenger side. The location of the camera, coextensive as it appears to be with Ruscha’s Ford, rotates from the car’s frontal orientation to its lateral window. The accordion format of the book, which suggests a temporal unfurling, mimics the sense of passage implicit in a drive. As the car rolls down the length of the street, it produces a series of images of contiguous spaces horizontally aligned. Entitled Every Building on the Sunset Strip, the resulting piece is organized as two parallel ribbons, one for either side of the Strip. The decision to present each side of the road in this format (separated into two thin bands divided by a wide band of white) further voids any sense of perspective, of buildings that exist in three-dimensional space.

Having fixed the exterior space as parallel to the car, in contrast to a concept of the car penetrating the space through which it moves, Every Building on the Sunset Strip suggests a nontraversable block between the viewer and the external flow of urban landscape. Outside objects are inaccessible; the car’s movement only ever skims over their surface, never accessing spatial depth to reach them. The buildings and cars on the Strip take up very little space; the book’s layout prevents any conventional signifier of distance on a two-dimensional plane. At the same time, the suffocating flatness of the exterior world pushes it squarely up against the car window. The tiny ruptures between photographic units also insist on absolute flatness. Any coherent perspectival rendering of space—as when a side street draws away in a diagonal line to signify recession—buckles in on itself through a fault line, where two snapshots are grafted side by side to continue the horizontal extension. The stitches between snapshots read like visual pleats that create inevitable imperfections on a clean seamless surface, alternations between continuity and discontinuity that the work simultaneously ignores and emphasizes. The lines between snapshots refuse to conjoin properly in many instances, leaving the trace of Ruscha’s own process of connecting photos together. Sometimes a sign, a billboard, or a car will simply break off (between 8282 Sunset Boulevard and Sweetzer Street, for example), as though it were erased. Through a perceptual crease, the almost seamless piece folds in on itself in minute breaks. And of course this barely noticeable erasure takes place as the photographic apparatus, the camera, snaps to “capture” the presence and plenitude of its material subject. As “the strip” serially unwinds, moments in its temporal and spatial unraveling sink into a nonspace despite, or rather because of, the absolute surface of the photograph squarely reproduced on the printed page.

The empirical flatness of the support—that flatness of modernist doctrine meant to preserve the autonomy of the work and differentiate it from the real space of the viewer—begins here to signal flatness as an experiential condition of daily reality, recorded with the bland facticity implicit in Ruscha’s singular approach to photography. Ruscha’s use of the car as a device through which to mediate any understanding of the exterior field of view proposes an internal contradiction, as though the trope of the car had been chosen to drive along a dialectic particular to the mid-1950s: the tension between exuberant affirmation of and resistance to a new mass commodity culture. Benjamin Buchloh discusses the affirmative dimension of Ruscha’s work under the rubric of an aesthetics of indifference, as evidenced by the formal logic of the work, in which “the commitment to antihierarchical organization of universally valid facticity operates as total affirmation.”7 The horizontality of Every Building on the Sunset Strip does function as a repository for the unmediated recording of every bit of data on the Sunset Strip. The structural properties of the work are transparent to Ruscha’s failure to manifest not only any conscious authorial intention in how the work is organized, but even to engage in any kind of selection. The subjective agency of the artist, and by reciprocal exchange that of the viewer, becomes entirely voided, spoken for in advance by a set of external forces.

Another way of interpreting Ruscha’s car-based books is to see his exploitation of the car-to-road-to-book-of-photographs as an assemblage of choices—within an increasingly limited matrix of possibilities—that frame and mediate an experience of that expropriative “outside,” comprised of a newly leveled terrain, reorganized by highway, dotted with the signage of consumerist abundance, and traversable only by that urpostwar commodity: the car. This assemblage exceeds the logic of total affirmation; Ruscha’s inaugural use of the car as a vehicle mediating active articulation transforms the work’s seeming banal facticity and initially apparent neutral indifference. In other words, the car sets in place, however paradoxically, an apparatus of engagement.

The books, after all, are at once marked by the interpolative exterior functions of the road and car, and characterized by a response that resituates the reader/viewer in an experiential dimension of process, even as they present new modes of banality under which the subject must learn to “speak.” The car could not mediate the encounter between vision, the subject, and the exterior field were it to reflect a total determining force brought to bear by that outside.8 The car is reorganized as a vehicle of articulation, rather than as an inert object that renders the subject equally inert as he passively moves through an environment unresponsive to his experience.

The questions nevertheless begin to mount: how does the medium of photography account for the books such as Every Building on the Sunset Strip and Twentysix Gasoline Stations? What of their status as books? As objects? Were we to provisionally accept the proposition of viewing the car as the means that generates the work, and mediates the procedures by which the work is made, what are the conditions of the impossibility of deploying previously established mediums such as painting, or even photography? Conversely, what conditions of possibility does the car-as-apparatus generate? The idea of work as mediated through the car that we see in Ruscha’s books confronted a paradoxical problem, a historical moment and context that placed the work of art, in its traditional medium-bound form as painting, sculpture, or “fine art” photography in the tradition of Edward Steichen, under duress. The other context within which to consider Ruscha’s books is the legacy of American documentary photography as practiced under the WPA, which had also lost its relevance in the absence of any immediate motivating factor or contemporary consequence by the 1940s. The mediums that had provided a coherent form through which to speak no longer held the same relevance to the conditions in which Ruscha sought a vehicle for visual articulation.

At first, when Ruscha investigated the relationship between the car and the photograph, the two seemed interchangeable, as if one might substitute for the other, and the car could symbolize the photograph. The ’38 Chevy, for example, presented 1938; it exhibited a photograph-like index of that year. Ruscha explains that “there was something about the curves of it.”9 A year old then, he could not have had any actual memories of 1938, but the car nevertheless emerged, a snapshot out of time, a fragment drawn from temporal continuity.10 Cars were like snapshots, mnemonic in the same way a photograph could be, fulgurating with a sense of recognition yet distant, removed from the subject’s own experience.

By the time of the many car trips between Oklahoma and L.A. that are recorded in Twentysix Gasoline Stations, however, Ruscha departed from the logic of substitution between the car and the photograph, which was a relationship organized around metaphor. He replaced it with an elision between the car and the practice of photography. Rather than occupying the position as the object at the end of the process of representation, the car becomes the apparatus through which visual presentation is enacted, performed.11 The car’s presence as the structure mediating the possibility of visual production is ubiquitous in Ruscha’s printed work. And when asked in an interview with Dave Hickey in 1982 why he failed to complete a particular work, Ruscha replied, “It’s probably too late, I think I missed the exit, the off ramp. I just can’t get it finished from where I am now. Maybe I’ll drive back around.”12 Reprinted on the flatbed of the page, the printed surface collapses with the road; the two fold into one another.

In the codex-like procession of Every Building on the Sunset Strip, both the book form and the medium of photography appear to provide a language that would offer the work a discursive context, or a “discursive space.”13 But it is the reassurance of any such identity, of any such discursive parameter, from which the work departs. Having started with and rejected photography as a system on which his work could draw, Ruscha’s work opens onto other structural limits. Yet it elaborates its language as it unfolds outward, transforming itself in process, in passage. Despite the work’s apparent photographic status, Ruscha vehemently eschewed claiming photography as his medium. As A. D. Coleman pointed out, “the Sunset Strip consists of continuous motorized photos printed on an accordion fold . . . to form an impressive and funny collection of photographic works by an artist that does not consider himself to be a photographer.” To all of Coleman’s inquiries, Ruscha baldly stated, “I have no interest in photography as a medium. Atget? I love his work just because it’s like going on a little trip. And that’s what I like about it.”14 Photography, like driving, becomes a mobilizing process. Furthermore, Ruscha deployed photography as a means without any evident or fixed end, calling it “an excuse to make a book,” which in turn remains open-ended, peripatetic.15 Every Building on the Sunset Strip participates in the temporal entanglement that photography permits, that of a continually present-past tense. For the piece freezes the Sunset Strip in the stasis of the continual present, even as the images derive from the irretrievable instant in which the camera shutter clicked. The Strip nevertheless further complicates matters by performing a sense of future as the pages accordion outward. Past, present, and future are drawn out of their relationship of consecutive succession and exposed as simultaneous, as frozen in a single ribbon.16 This simultaneity must be differentiated from the simultaneity of the “pregnant moment” in narrative painting. Where the moment invested with all of the weight of narrative possibility presents the intersection that discloses the past and suggests the resulting future, Ruscha’s simultaneity operates as a nonclimactic unfolding devoid of causal sequence. This band form engendered by the car’s movement does indeed have its own history as Other within the division of modernist mediums. The possibility of the coexistence of spatiality and temporality in a single form plays the part of the repressed within Enlightenment aesthetics, as assimilated to the modernist work of Clement Greenberg and later Michael Fried. Gotthold Lessing’s Laocoon (1766) defines the inherent limits of poetry and the visual arts along the axes of spatiality and temporality, a priori assuming their fundamental mutual opposition. Through its extended, temporally successive unfurling, coupled with the stasis and spatial simultaneity of the stretched-out whole, the horizontal band fails to recognize the spatial and temporal as two discrete and oppositional registers. For Lessing the scroll form (such as the scrolls that issue from the mouths of figures in old Gothic paintings) carried the remnants of pre-Enlightenment imagery.17 Here, the scroll conveys the failure of representational logic through its hybridity and ambivalent state as both spatial and open to temporal passage. In Every Building on the Sunset Strip, the horizontal band’s procession is not governed by a reassuring model or template replete with its own internal plenitude (such as the book or the photograph), or its own coherence as structurally spatial or temporal. Photography and the book are at odds as the work negotiates the space between these discourses or determining structures, and thereby ultimately exceeds them. It does not occupy or reference a previously opened cultural space, or advance a signifiable object or form. Rather, it elaborates its language and form as it works in passage, and transforms itself in process. In other words, as it unravels, it elaborates from within itself an other.

The floating band of Every Building on the Sunset Strip is cut away from a starting point, or an origin, that would explain it and lend it a sense of proper cause, and likewise lacks an end that would provide closure. It appears to take place in a zone void of any external orientation, any ground. As a fragment of a continuous stretch, the work surfaces as the articulation of passage. As such, it does not occupy or reference a previously opened cultural space; rather it elaborates its form as it stretches outward. As a ride down Los Angeles’s Sunset Strip, the piece also expresses temporal passage experienced as “between times.” Time—duration—is suspended and captured in an instant that is liminal. It opens onto another instance of time and space, the passing instants of an exchange, a process.

The book itself surfaces as a function of the road as the two terms map onto one another. The book format is defined by motion; turning a page propels the text as it displaces it. Passage thus determines the logic of the car’s movement, which in turn generates a horizontal band structure suspended in a tension between pictorial spatiality and temporality. Ruscha’s work thus troubles photography’s static logic, and paradoxically reconstitutes it as “going on a little trip,” necessarily dilated through time and space.

What are the conditions enabling, or requiring, even, this hybrid modality long banished from modern aesthetics? Ruscha’s printed work inaugurates a communicative structure responding to the rhythm and particular exigencies of the historical matrix of postwar urban America. Points of intersection emerge with new spatial and perceptual structures of the 1950s American context. Of course it is difficult to distinguish a cultural history of the 1950s and ’60s from the omnipresent topos of the car and the road. Postwar America saw the sudden introduction of the car into almost every household as the middle class somehow became (mythically) universal. On a concrete level, one of the federal government’s first national projects after the war was to harness contemporary military technology to terrace and level the land in order to install a nationwide webbing of interstate highways. The highway, and its role in the creation of American suburbia, fed into and off of the accelerated postwar production and consumption of cars, that emblem of Taylorized ’50s culture. Postwar modernity’s quintessential commodity object, in turn, produced a model of subjectivity. On the register of individual experience, the car naturalizes a sense of perception in movement: a new understanding of motion became integrated into the driver’s everyday perception, thereby tailoring subjectivity to assimilate new modes of sensory interaction with everyday objects and everyday spaces. This model of vision becomes an experiential norm.

Given this perceptual norm, is it possible to resist the interpellative force of the car and the road? Can the assimilation—a totalizing imprint into every recess of daily sensory perception constituted around car-generated experience—successfully suppress any model of a resistant subject? Aren’t there other perceptual schema that are brought to bear on one’s experience of the car, of the road? What would happen if a “metaphorical vehicle were borrowed in order to take a spin in reality?”18 Could an actual vehicle be borrowed to take a spin in reality, or better, to reroute reality?

The book and the topos of the car already occupied an interlocked relationship within modernism. Tracing the evolution of printed media, Walter Benjamin noted, “Centuries ago it began lying down, passing from the upright inscription to the manuscript resting on sloping desks before finally taking to bed in the printed book.”19 Benjamin’s investigation of the flat page takes place in an essay entitled “EineBahnStrasse,” or “One-Way Street” (1928). This text is comprised of aphorisms, observations, and memories assembled between 1924 and 1928 and connected in the essay by the single thread of a metaphor of a car driving through a landscape of perceptions, thoughts, and interpretations of modern life. The essay suggests a topographical consciousness where the temporal unfolding of thought is mapped onto an idea of space explored, as well as onto the concrete space of the printed page. At the same time, Benjamin notes the potential obsolescence of the traditional book medium, and calls for new, more readily accessible forms of literature relevant to a new industrial mass society. “One-Way Street” begins with a gasoline station. The author is filling up as he prepares to set out on the road, recast in the essay as the stretch of print on the page over which the author traverses a field of thoughts about modernity. The car becomes the vehicle through which the subject opens onto and addresses the exterior world and the reader.

For Benjamin, the model of the subject as guaranteed by a contemplative interiority has, already by the mid-1920s, been replaced with a subjectivity formed by new modes of perception. Although critical of the expropriation of the subject by mass culture, Benjamin’s work nevertheless acknowledges the obsolescence of a contemplative critical capacity that operates as a function of “correct distancing” of “perspectives and prospects” and coherent “standpoints.”20 He specifically evokes the car, for him a strictly metaphorical vehicle, to deal with this loss and retain critical potential in new conditions of modernity.21 In “One-Way Street,” the car’s journey over the road still presents the possibility of active, if fragmentary, consciousness. The car metaphor, in other words, presents a mode of insinuating the self into the complicated folds of new, ever-flattening daily experience. Because of the changing conditions of daily life, the traditional book form—with all of its requisite depth of subjective interiority—fails to communicate. It reads as a “pretentious, universal gesture” unable to confront fragmentary modernity.22 “Significant literary work must nurture the inconspicuous forms that fit its influence in active communities—in leaflets, brochures, articles. Only this prompt language shows itself actively equal to the moment.”23 Benjamin draws the following analogy: “Opinions are to the vast apparatus of social existence what oil is to machines: one does not go up to a turbine and pour machine oil over it, one pours a little over the little hidden spindles and joints that one has to know.”24 In other words, the weighty book, its internally centered totality, represses the hidden, subtle contradictions of modernity. Benjamin’s car traverses and dismantles, through the juxtaposition of fragments, the synthetic ideological whole.

Yet, true to dialectical form, this evocation of interstitial text, generated by that ride down a one-way street headed to modernity in order to come to terms with modernity, anticipates its own disappearance and appropriation. Having cast the book’s emergence in a radically emancipatory light, Benjamin predicts horizontally-oriented print’s imminent absorption into the totality of capitalism’s image culture. He traces the utopian horizontalization of print to point out that now “it is pitilessly dragged out onto the street by advertisements and subjected to the brutal heteronomies of economic chaos . . . it begins just as slowly to rise again from the ground. The newspaper is read more in the vertical than horizontal plane, while film and advertisement force the printed word entirely onto the dictatorial perpendicular.”25 In other words, Benjamin’s investment in text-as-road exposes itself as an insistence upon the critical import of a horizontality suggestive of process—as the process-oriented act of reading insists upon—within image-driven modernity.

Benjamin’s evocation of text as horizontality, and horizontality as an experience of passage and movement, becomes a way of moving through the biaxial tension between the actively traversed text and the passively received flood of advertisements—understood as the authoritarian perpendicular—while simultaneously rejecting irrelevant and outmoded forms of literature such as “the pretentious… book.”26 Cast as a passage from one cultural space to another, the text doubly plays the role of a car passing by on the road. While Benjamin’s assertion that the experience of modernity, or the evolution of forms of daily existence, requires corresponding new forms of cultural articulation and critique, Ruscha’s work operates in tandem with newly evolved postwar modes of perceptual experience. Nevertheless, Ruscha’s work threatens to collapse Benjamin’s dialectic by driving it to the point of working against it; he reconfigures the horizontality-of-road-as-reading-and-moving to the point of almost stasis and total flatness. Yet, having arrived at an extreme position, Ruscha’s car proposes another internal contradiction. The Sunset Strip participates in the logic of general equivalence of late-twentieth-century image culture, insofar as it posits a serial organization that renders all of its terms equal in an external, undifferentiated flow. On the other hand, that seamlessness is willfully pressured from within and ultimately deferred by the band structure’s failure to internally unite.

Real Estate Opportunities (1970), a work generated by driving peripatetically from place to place, also elaborates this notion of passage. The book is composed of twenty-five photographs of twenty-five parcels of land that were on the market at the time. An address functions as a caption to each image. Every single plot is of course different from every other, and yet appears utterly generic and incidental along the segment of highway or road that also makes its way into the photograph. Apart from their value as salable items, the spaces themselves do not express much. They are both urban and rural patches of undifferentiated land. Endless irrelevant detail, such as shrubbery, plots of grass, and gravel on roads read as a kind of visual static. Caught in the photographic image, these details fail to characterize the plots. Each detail, in turn, reads more as an accident, an exception, than as necessary to the visual field. The plots of land lack features that would define them or assign them an identity. Peripheral, these lots border onto something, some other property.27

This also characterizes the kind of vacancy—on the part of the subject as well as the historical moment—that forces articulation of the condition of the interstice through which expression, now divorced from the traditional mediums that would have delivered it, comes to be. For there is no ground, no a priori given, such as a medium, with a historically constructed language on which to draw. This mode of expression, the peripatetic ride over interstitial urban spaces, is not articulated through a medium or form ready to present it to view. This mode of expression is not the result of intentionality (bounded in an awareness of cause and of finality), but emerges now as something contingent and singular.

The interstitial spaces of Real Estate Opportunities evoke a real-estate boom on the decline, the sleazy, get-rich-quick undercurrent of rapid urban transformation in late-’60s Los Angeles. The car roves from site to site even as this process gets caught by the “snap of a camera” model of temporality and rendered frozen in still images in a book. For Yve-Alain Bois these negative spaces, most likely “reintegrated into the circuit of production,” speak to a universal late capitalist condition in which systems of exchange allow nothing to go unassimilated.28

The lots nevertheless surface as sites of flickering momentary resistance. Ruscha photographed these spaces on the very cusp of their reintegration into systems. The “for sale” signs reference a seemingly monolithic system of consumption that will absorb each space and eventually spit them out again as entropic waste product. But those very ephemeral instances themselves suggest a vestigial and contingent space for the subject. Like the horizontal band of Every Building on the Sunset Strip, generated by the camera/car as it continues on, they fold out of the flat omnipresence of an endlessly expropriating social system, and simultaneously pose a split second of dissonance within the obsessive order of the drive to urban form. The band as road, as passage, participates in a temporal cycle where its predictions for the future consume the very conditions of its inception. The road, as a segment of passage, remains suspended in its coming and going. The car only ever arrives or departs; it never becomes part of a site, a location.

In an essay for Artforum entitled “American Prayers,” Kim Gordon interprets Ruscha’s work as a fugitive passage through a brief stretch in cultural history: “Pop art glorified the image of America’s surface while exposing the violence of consumerism. But the shock value and absurdity of these images made the cultural critique entertaining. It was the music of the sixties that really hinted at what lurked within the American dream. L.A.’s lush landscaping only begins to make sense when you realize that underneath it is a desert. L.A. is Ed Ruscha’s desert on fire. His work is analogous to that era of apocalyptic music… then Manson and the family were tried and convicted, the Vietnam war ended, everything returned to normal, corporate rock began to grow.”29

Critical to Gordon’s narrative of the history of the West Coast sixties is her placement of Ruscha in the momentary stitch barely connecting the naively utopian before and the resigned and affirmative after characterized by the increased corporatization of youth culture, of the rise of the culture industry at large: the apparently seamless harnessing of culture and the accompanying metamorphosis of the Sunset Strip. In Gordon’s dialectic, Ruscha occupies the connective tissue, the momentary passing through, between the terms rather than the body proper of any term. His is the undercurrent that snaps in the blink of the camera’s shutter in the car’s passage over the road, the desert on fire, the ground welling up and then receding again. A structuring characteristic of the car-as-medium is that it does not present a still, fixed form. The simultaneously fragmentary and timeline-like unfolding of Every Building on the Sunset Strip emerges from this construction of temporality: the car drives through space that yields to time. Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, and Real Estate Opportunities articulate the fragment that wells up in the blink of the camera’s shutter and then recedes as the car passes over the road, a segment in its incompletion.

Image Future, Lev Manovich




Uneven Development

What kinds of images will dominate visual culture a number of decades from now? Would they still be similar to the typical image that surrounds us today—photographs that are digitally manipulated and often combined with various graphical elements and type? Or would future images be completely different? Would photographic code fade away in favor of something else?

There are good reasons to assume that the future images would be photograph-like. Like a virus, a photograph turned out to be an incredibly resilient representational code: it survived waves of technological change, including computerization of all stages of cultural production and distribution. The reason for this persistence of photographic code lies in its flexibility: photographs can be easily mixed with all other visual forms—drawings, 2D and 3D designs, line diagrams, and type. As a result, while photographs truly dominate contemporary visual culture, most of them are not pure photographs but various mutations and hybrids: photographs which went through various filters and manual adjustments to achieve a more stylized look, a more flat graphic look, more saturated color, etc.; photographs mixed with design and type elements; photographs which are not limited to the part of the spectrum visible to a human eye (night vision, X-ray); simulated photographs done with 3D computer graphics; and so on. Therefore, while we can say that today we live in a "photographic culture," we also need to start reading the word "photographic" in a new way. "Photographic" today is really photo-GRAPHIC, the photo providing only an initial layer for the overall graphical mix.

One way is which change happens in nature, society, and culture is inside-out. The internal structure changes first, and this change affects the visible skin only later. For instance, according to Marxist theory of historical development, infrastructure (i.e., mode of production in a given society, also called "base") changes well before superstructure (ideology and culture in this society). In a different example, think of technology design in the twentieth century: typically, a new type of machine was at first fitted within old, familiar skin (for instance, early twentieth-century cars emulated the form of horse carriages). The familiar McLuhan idea that the new media first emulates old media is another example of this type of change. In this case, a new mode of media production, so to speak, is first used to support old structures of media organization, before the new structure emerges. For instance, the first typeset books were designed to emulate hand-written books; cinema first emulated theater; and so on.

This concept of uneven development can be useful in thinking about the changes in contemporary visual culture. Since it beginnings fifty years ago, computerization of photography (and cinematography) has by now completely changed the internal structure of a photographic image; yet its "skin," i.e. the way the image looks, still largely remains the same. It is therefore possible that at some point in the future the "skin" of an image would also become completely different, but this has not happened yet. So we can say at present our visual culture is characterized by a new computer "base" and old photographic "superstructure."

The Matrix trilogy of films provides us with a very rich set of examples perfect for thinking further about these issues. The trilogy is an allegory about how its visual universe is constructed. That is, the films tell us about the Matrix, the virtual universe which is maintained by computers—and of course, visually the images of the Matrix which we the viewers see in the films were all indeed assembled with the help of software (the animators sometimes used Maya but mostly relied on custom-written programs). So there is a perfect symmetry between us, the viewers of a film, and the people who live inside the Matrix—except while the computers running the Matrix are capable of doing it in real time, most scenes in each of The Matrix films took months and even years to put together. (So The Matrix can be also interpreted as the futuristic vision of computer games at a point in a future when it would become possible to render The Matrix-style visual effects in real time.)

The key to the visual universe of The Matrix trilogy is the new set of computer graphic processes that over the years were developed by John Gaeta and his colleagues at ESC Entertainment. Gaeta coined names for these processes: "virtual cinema," "virtual human," "universal capture," "image-based rendering," and others. Together, these processes represent a true milestone in the history of computer-driven special effects. They take to their logical conclusion the developments of the 1990s, such as motion capture, and simultaneously open a new stage. [1] We can say that with The Matrix, the old "base" of photography has finally been completely replaced by a new computer-driven one. What remains to be seen is how the "superstructure" of a photographic image—what it represents and how—will change to accommodate this "base."




Reality Simulation Versus Reality Sampling

In order to understand better the significance of Gaeta's method, let us briefly run through the history of 3D photo-realistic image synthesis and its use in the film industry. In 1963, Lawrence G. Roberts (who later in the 1960s became one of the key people behind the development of ARPANET but at that time was a graduate student at MIT) published a description of a computer algorithm to construct images in linear perspective. These images represented the objects through lines; in contemporary language of computer graphics they can be called "wire frames." Approximately ten years later, computer scientists designed algorithms that allowed for the creation of shaded images (so-called Gouraud shading and Phong shading, named after the computer scientists who create the corresponding algorithms). From the middle of the 1970s to the end of the 1980s, the field of 3D computer graphics went through rapid development. Every year new fundamental techniques were arrived at: transparency, shadows, image mapping, bump texturing, particle system, compositing, ray tracing, radiosity, and so on. [2] By the end of this creative and fruitful period in the history of the field, it was possible to use a combination of these techniques to synthesize images of almost every subject that often were not easily distinguishable from traditional cinematography.

All this research was based on one fundamental assumption: in order to re-create an image of reality identical to the one captured by a film camera, we need to systematically simulate the actual physics involved in construction of this image. This means simulating the complex interactions between light sources, the properties of different materials (cloth, metal, glass, etc.), and the properties of physical cameras, including all their limitations such as depth of field and motion blur. Since it was obvious to computer scientists that if they exactly simulate all this physics, a computer would take forever to calculate even a single image, they put their energy in inventing various short cuts which would create sufficiently realistic images while involving fewer calculation steps. So in fact each of the techniques for image synthesis I mentioned in the above paragraph is one such "hack"—a particular approximation of a particular subset of all possible interactions between light sources, materials, and cameras.

This assumption also means that you are re-creating reality step-by-step, from scratch. Every time you want to make a still image or an animation of some object or scene, the story of creation from the Bible is being replayed.

(I imagine God creating the Universe by going through the numerous menus of a professional 3D modeling, animation, and rendering program such as Maya. First he has to make all the geometry: manipulating splines, extruding contours, adding bevels...Next for every object and creature he has to choose the material properties: specular color, transparency level, image, bump, and reflexion maps, and so on. He finishes one page of menus, wipes his forehead, and starts working on the next menu page. Now on to defining the lights: again, dozens of menu options need to be selected. He renders the scene, looks at the result, and admires his creation. But he is far from being done: the universe he has in mind is not a still image but an animation, which means that the water has to flow, the grass and leaves have to move under the blow of the wind, and all the creatures also have to move. He sights and opens another set of menus where he has to define the parameters of algorithms that simulate the physics of motion. And on, and on, and on. Finally the world itself is finished and it looks good; but now God wants to create the Man so he can admire his creation. God sighs again, and takes from the shelf a set of Maya manuals...)

Of course we are in somewhat better position than God was. He was creating everything for the first time, so he could not borrow things from anywhere. Therefore everything had to be built and defined from scratch. But we are not creating a new universe but instead visually simulating a universe that already exists, i.e. physical reality. Therefore computer scientists working on 3D computer graphics techniques realized early on that in addition to approximating the physics involved they can sometimes take another shortcut. Instead of defining something from scratch through the algorithms, they can simply sample it from existing reality and incorporate these samples into the construction process.

Examples of the application of this idea are the techniques of texture mapping and bump mapping which were introduced already in the second part of the 1970s. With texture mapping, any 2D digital image—which can be a close-up of some texture such as wood grain or bricks, but which can be also anything else, for instance a logo, a photograph of a face or of clouds—is mathematically wrapped around virtual geometry. This is a very effective way to add visual richness of a real world to a virtual scene. Bump texturing works similarly, but in this case the 2D image is used as a way to quickly add complexity to the geometry itself. For instance, instead of having to manually model all the little cracks and indentations which make up the 3D texture of a wall made from concrete, an artist can simply take a photograph of an existing wall, convert into a grayscale image, and then feed this image to the rendering algorithm. The algorithm treats grayscale image as a depth map, i.e. the value of every pixel is being interpreted as relative height of the surface. So in this example, light pixels become points on the wall that are a little in front while dark pixels become points that are a little behind. The result is enormous saving in the amount of time necessary to recreate a particular but very important aspect of our physical reality: a slight and usually regular 3D texture found in most natural and many human-made surfaces, from the bark of a tree to a woven cloth.

Other 3D computer graphics techniques based on the idea of sampling existing reality include reflection mapping and 3D digitizing. Despite the fact that all these techniques have been always widely used as soon as they were invented, many people in the field (as far as I can see) always felt that they were cheating. Why? I think this feeling was there because the overall conceptual paradigm for creating photorealistic computer graphics was to simulate everything from scratch through algorithms. So if you had to use the techniques based on directly sampling reality, you somehow felt that this was just temporary—because the appropriate algorithms were not yet developed or because the machines were too slow. You also had this feeling because once you started to manually sample reality and then tried to include these samples in your perfect algorithmically defined image, things rarely would fit exactly right, and painstaking manual adjustments were required. For instance, texture mapping would work perfectly if applied it to straight surface, but if the surface was curved, inevitable distortion would occur.

(I am using "we" here and in other places in this text because I spent approximately seven years working professionally in the field of 3D computer animation between 1984 and 1992, so I still feel a certain identification with this field. At IMAGINA 2003 festival in Barcelona I met John Gaeta and Greg Juby from ESC, who were there to lecture on the making of The Matrix. Slowly it became clear that the three of use were connected by multiple threads. In 1984 I went to work for a company in New York called Digital Effects that at the time was one among seven companies in the world focused on 3D computer animation for television and film. Company president Jeff Kleiser later founded another company—Kleiser- Walczak—where Greg Juby worked for a few years in the 1990s. Juby graduated from Syracuse University where—as we discovered over dinner—he was my student in the very first university class in digital arts I ever taught [1992]. While working at Kleiser's company, Juby met John Gaeta and eventually went to work for him at ESC. Finally, it also turned out that before we turned to computer graphics both Gaeta and I were students at New York University film school.)

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s the "reality simulation" paradigm and "reality sampling" paradigm co-existed side-by-side. More precisely, as I suggested above, the sampling paradigm was "imbedded" within the reality simulation paradigm. It was common sense that the way to create photorealistic images of reality is by simulating its physics as precisely as one could. Sampling existing reality and then adding these samples to a virtual scene was a trick, a shortcut within the otherwise honest game of simulation.




"Total Capture": Building The Matrix

So far we have looked at the paradigms of the 3D computer graphics field without considering the uses of the simulated images. So what happens if you want to incorporate photorealistic images into a film? This introduces a new constraint. Not only does every simulated image have to be consistent internally, with the cast shadows corresponding to the light sources, and so on, but now it also has to be consistent with the cinematography of a film. The simulated universe and live action universe have to match perfectly (I am talking here about the "normal" use of computer graphics in narrative films and not more graphical aesthetics of TV graphics and music videos which often deliberately juxtaposes different visual codes). As can be seen in retrospect, this new constraint eventually changed the relationship between the two paradigms in favor of the sampling paradigm. But this is only visible now, after The Matrix films made the sampling paradigm the cornerstone of its visual universe. [3]

At first, when filmmakers started to incorporate synthetic 3D images in films, this did not have any effect on how people thought about 3D image synthesis. The first feature film that had 3D computer images was Looker (1980). Throughout the 1980s, a number of films were made which used computer images but always only as a very small element within the overall film narrative (Tron, which was released in 1982 and which can be compared to The Matrix, since its universe is situated inside a computer and created through computer graphics, was an exception). For instance, one of Star Trek films contained a scene of a planet coming to life; it was created using the very first particle system. But this was a single scene, and it had no interaction with any other scenes in the film.

In the early 1990s, the situation had started to change. With pioneering films such as The Abyss (James Cameron, 1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (James Cameron, 1991), and Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993), computer generated characters became the key protagonists of film narratives. This meant that they would appear in dozens or even hundreds of shots throughout a film, and that in most of these shots computer characters would have to be integrated with real environments and human actors captured via live action photography (or what in the business is called "live plate.") Examples are the T-1000 cyborg character in Terminator 2, or dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. These computer-generated characters are situated inside the live-action universe (obtained by sampling physical reality via 35mm film camera). The simulated world is located inside the captured world, and the two have to match perfectly.

As I pointed out in The Language of New Media in the discussion of compositing, perfectly aligning elements that come from different sources is one of fundamental challenges of computer-based realism. Throughout the 1990s, filmmakers and special effects artists dealt with this challenge using a variety of techniques and methods. What Gaeta realized earlier than the others is that the best way to align the two universes of live action and 3D computer graphics was to build a single new universe [4] .

Rather than treating reality sampling as just one technique to be used along with many other "proper" algorithmic techniques of image synthesis, Gaeta turned it into the key foundation of his process. The process systematically takes physical reality apart and then systematically reassembles the elements into a virtual computer-based representation. The result is a new kind of image that has photographic/cinematographic appearance and detail yet internally is structured in a completely different way.

How does the process work? The geometry of an actor's head is captured with the help of a 3D scanner. Next, an actor's performance is recorded using three high-resolution cameras. This includes everything an actor will say in a film and all possible facial expressions. [5] (During the production the studio was capturing over five terabytes of data each day.) Next special algorithms are used to align the three images by tracking a number of points on the face in order to stitch three images into one. This new image is then mapped onto the geometry model. The information in the image is used not only as a texture map but also as a kind of bump map to transform locally the geometry of the model, in correspondence with facial movements. The end result is a perfect reconstruction of the captured performance, now available as 3D computer graphics data—with all the advantages that come from having such representation.

This process is significantly different from the commonly accepted methods used to create computer-based special effects, namely "keyframing" and physically-based modeling. With the first method, an animator specifies the key positions of a 3D model, and the computer calculates in-between frames. With the second method, all the animation is automatically created by software that simulates the physics underlying the movement. (This method thus represents a particular instance of the "reality simulation" paradigm I already discussed.) For instance, to create a realistic animation of a moving creature, the programmers model its skeleton, muscles, and skin, and specify the algorithms that simulate the actual physics involved. Often the two methods are combined: for instance, physically based modeling can be used to animate a running dinosaur while manual animation can be used for shots where the dinosaur interacts with human characters.

At the time of this writing, the most impressive achievement in physically-based modeling was the battle in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Peter Jackson, 2003), which involved tens of thousands of virtual soldiers all driven by Massive software. [6] Similar to the Non-human Players (or bots) in computer games, each virtual soldier was given the ability to "see" the terrain and other soldiers, a set of priorities and an independent "brain," i.e. an A.I. program which directs a character's actions based on the perceptual inputs and priorities. But because Massive software, in contrast to the A.I. of games, does not have to run in real time, it can create the scenes with hundreds of thousands of realistically behaving agents (one commercial created with the help of Massive software featured 146,000 virtual characters.)

Gaeta's method uses neither manual animation nor simulation of the underlying physics. Instead, it directly captures reality, including color, texture and movement. Short sequences of the actor's performances are encoded as 3D computer animations; these animations form a library from which the filmmakers can then draw as they compose a scene. The analogy with musical sampling is obvious here. As Gaeta pointed out, his team never used manual animation to try to tweak the motion of a character's face; however, just as a musician may, they would often "hold" a particular expression before going to the next one. [7] This suggests another analogy—editing videotape. But this is second-degree editing, so to speak: instead of simply capturing segments of reality on video and then joining them together, Gaeta's method produces complete virtual recreations of particular phenomena— self-contained micro-worlds—which can be then further edited and embedded within a larger 3D simulated space.




"Image Rendering": Reality Re-assembled

Such a method combines the best of both worlds: physical reality as captured by lens-based cameras, and synthetic 3D computer graphics. While it is possible to recreate the richness of the visible world through manual painting and animation, as well as through various computer graphics techniques (texture mapping, bump mapping, physical modeling, etc.), it is expensive in terms of labor involved. Even with physically based modeling techniques, countless parameters have to be tweaked before the animation looks right. In contrast, capturing visible reality through lens on film, tape, DVD-R, computer hard drive, or other media is cheap: just point the camera and press the "record" button.

The disadvantage of such recordings is that they lack the flexibility demanded by contemporary remix culture. This culture demands not self-contained aesthetic objects or self-contained records of reality but smaller units—parts that can be easily changed and combined with other parts in endless combinations. However, because the lens-based recording process flattens the 3-D semantic structure of reality, converting a space filled with discrete objects into a flat field of pixels, any kind of editing operation—deleting objects, adding new ones, compositing, etc.—becomes quite different.

In contrast, 3D computer-generated worlds have the exact flexibility one would expect from media in the Information Age. (It is not therefore accidental that 3D computer representation —along with hypertext and other new computer-based data representation methods—was conceptualized in the same decade when the transformation of advanced industrialized societies into information societies became visible.) In a 3D computer-generated world everything is discrete: objects are defined by points described in terms of their XYZ coordinates; other properties of objects such as color, transparency, and reflectivity are similarly described in terms of discrete numbers. To duplicate an object a hundred times requires only a few mouse clicks or typing a short command on a command line; similarly, all other properties of a world can always be easily changed. Just as a sequence of genes contains the code, which is expanded into a complex organism, a compact description of a 3D world can be quickly transmitted through the network, with the client computer reconstructing the full world (this is how online multi-player computer games and simulators work).

Beginning in the late 1970s when James Blinn introduced texture mapping [8], computer scientists, designers, and animators were gradually expanding the range of information that can be recorded in the real world and then incorporated into a computer model. Until the early 1990s this information mostly involved the appearance of the objects: color, texture, light effects. The next significant step was probably the development of motion capture, which during the first half of the 1990s was quickly adopted in the movie and game industries. Now computer-synthesized worlds relied not only on sampling the appearance of the real world but also the recordings of movements of animals and humans. Building on all these techniques, Gaeta's method takes them to a new stage: capturing just about everything that at present can be captured and then reassembling the samples to create a digital (and thus completely malleable) recreation. Put in a larger context, the resulting 2D/3D hybrid representation perfectly fits with the most progressive trends in contemporary culture which are all based on the idea of a hybrid.




The New Hybrid

It is my strong feeling that the emerging "information aesthetics" (i.e., the new cultural features specific to information society) has or will have a very different logic from Modernism. The latter was driven by a strong desire to erase the old—visible as much in the avant-garde artists' (particularly the Futurists') statements that museums should be burned, as well as in the dramatic destruction of all social and spiritual realities of many people in Russia after the 1917 revolution, and in other countries after they became Soviet satellites after 1945. Culturally and ideologically, Modernists wanted to start with a tabula rasa, radically distancing themselves from the past. It was only in the 1960s that this move started to feel inappropriate, as manifested both in the loosening of ideology in Communist countries and the beginnings of a new Postmodern sensibility in the West. To quote the title of a famous book by Robert Venturi et al (published in 1972, it was the first systematic manifestation of the new sensibility), Learning from Las Vegas involved admitting that organically developing vernacular cultures involved bricolage and hybridity, rather than the purity seen, for instance, in "international style" which was still practiced by architects world-wide at that time. Driven less by the desire to imitate vernacular cultures and more by the new availability of previous cultural artifacts stored on magnetic and soon digital media, in the 1980s commercial culture in the West systematically replaced purity by stylistic heterogeneity montage. Finally, when the Soviet Empire collapsed, Postmodernism won the world over.

Today we have a very real danger of being imprisoned by a new "international style"— something which we can call "global style." The cultural globalization, of which cheap international flights and the Internet are the two most visible carriers, erases certain cultural specificity with an energy and speed impossible for Modernism. Yet we also witness today a different logic at work: the desire to creatively place together old and new, local and transnational, in various combinations. It is this logic, for instance, which made cities such as Barcelona (where I talked with John Gaeta in the context of Art Futura 2003 festival which led to this article) such a "hip" and "in" place today. All over Barcelona, architectural styles of many past centuries co-exist with new, "cool" spaces of bars, hotels, museums, and so on. Medieval meets multi-national, Gaudi meets Dolce and Gabana, Mediterranean time meets Internet time. The result is the incredible sense of energy which one feels physically just walking along the street. It is this hybrid energy, which characterizes in my view the most successful cultural phenomena today. [9] The hybrid 2D/3D image of The Matrix is one such hybrid.

The historians of cinema often draw a contrast between the Lumières and Marey. Along with a number of inventors in other countries all working independently from each other, the Lumières created what we now know as cinema—the effect of motion based on the synthesis of discrete images. Earlier Muybridge had already developed a way to take successive photographs of a moving object such as horse; eventually the Lumières and others figured out how to take enough samples so that when projected they perceptually fuse into continuous motion. Being a scientist, Marey was driven by an opposite desire: not to create a seamless illusion of the visible world but rather to be able to understand its structure by keeping subsequent samples discrete. Since he wanted to be able to easily compare these samples, he perfected a method whereby the subsequent images of moving objects were combined within a single image, thus making the changes clearly visible.

The hybrid image of The Matrix in some ways can be understand as the synthesis of these two approaches which for a hundred years remained in opposition. Like the Lumières, Gaeta's goal is to create a seamless illusion. At the same time, like Marey, he also wants to be able to edit and sequence the individual recordings.

At the beginning of this article I evoked the notion of uneven development, pointing out that often the inside structure ("infrastructure") completely changes before the surface ("superstructure") catches up. What does this idea imply for the future of images and in particular 2D/3D hybrids as developed by Gaeta and others? As Gaeta pointed out, while his method can be used to make all kinds of images, so far it has been used in the service of realism as it is defined in cinema—i.e., anything the viewer will see has to obey the laws of physics. [10] So in the case of The Matrix, its images still have a traditional "realistic" appearance while internally they are structured in a completely new way. In short, we see the old "superstructure" which still sits on top of the new "infrastructure." What kinds of images would we see if the superstructure would finally catch up with the infrastructure?

Of course, while the special effects of Hollywood movies so far follow the constraint of realism, i.e. obeying the laws of physics, they are not exactly the same as before. In order to sell movie tickets, DVDs, and all other merchandise, each new special effects film tries to top the previous one in terms of showing something that nobody has seen before. In The Matrix it was "bullet time"; in The Matrix Reloaded it was the Burly Brawl scene where dozens of identical clones fight Neo. The fact that the image is constructed differently internally does allow for all kinds of new effects; listening to Gaeta it is clear that for him the key advantage of such images is the possibility it offers for virtual cinematography. That is, if before camera movement was limited to a small and well-defined set of moves—pan, dolly, roll—now it can move in any trajectory imaginable for as long as the director wants. Gaeta talks about the Burly Brawl scene in terms of virtual choreography: both choreographing the intricate and long camera moves and also all the bodies participating in the flight (all of them are digital recreations assembled using Gaeta's method as described above).

According to Gaeta, creating this one scene took about three years. So while in principle Gaeta's method represents the most flexible way to recreate visible reality in a computer so far, it will be years before this method is streamlined and standardized enough for these advantages to become obvious. But when it happens, the artists will have an extremely flexible hybrid medium at their disposal: completely virtualized cinema. Rather than expecting that any of the present pure forms will dominate the future of visual culture, I think this future belongs to such hybrids. In other words, the future images would probably be still photographic—although only on the surface.







[1] Not all of special effects in The Matrix rely on new process by Gaeta, and of course many other Hollywood films already use some of the same strategies. I decided to focus on his process as it was used in The Matrix in this text because it articulates a new approach to image construction most systematically—and also because in contrast to many others in the special effects industry, Gaeta has extensively reflected on the process he developed, coming up with a number of terms to describe its different stages such as "universal capture" and "image rendering."

[2] Although not everybody would agree with this analysis, I feel that after the end of 1980s the field significantly slowed down: on the one hand, all key techniques which can be used to create photorealistic 3D images have already been discovered; on the other hand, rapid development of computer hardware in the 1990s meant that computer scientists no longer had to develop new techniques to make the rendering faster, since the already developed algorithms would now run fast enough.
