A Fluxus Bibliography, Ken Friedman and Owen Smith

About this Bibliography

There are several ways to present a bibliography of information on Fluxus. Every presentation requires a different organizing principle and the lists grow all the time. For this reason, the most flexible way to present a general bibliography is to organize it chronologically by year, and to present entries alphabetically within each year.

To the degree that it is possible, the format style is consistent. There are always matters of judgment, such as deciding when to list an exhibition catalogue as a book by the name of the editor or author, and when to treat it as a document cited by title. Others might choose to organize the data in a different way.

Any complete bibliography on Fluxus and Fluxus artists would run to hundreds of pages of small print. This means that any selection will always fall short. We have tried to include a broad overview of articles, books, and catalogues. Because it is easier for readers to locate recent publications than those from the past, the bibliography becomes more comprehensive as it moves toward the present.

We avoid abbreviations that are common in one culture and not clear in others. We also try to make dates clear and use written abbreviations for volume (vol.) and number (no.) rather than introducing the ambiguity of short systems.

Special thanks to Hoseon Cheon, Dick Higgins, Matthew Hogan, James Lewes and Jean Sellem for their contributions earlier editions of this bibliography.
